The Most Important Word in Artificial Intelligence

March 17, 20261 min read

I've built AI systems. I've led AI teams. I've completed a doctorate in AI.

After all of it, I still believe the most important word in artificial intelligence is not artificial. It's intelligence.

Human intelligence.

AI strategy isn't about algorithms. It's about people.

Technology can generate outputs. It takes people to apply judgment, context, and responsibility. That's the part of intelligence no model can replace — not because the technology isn't advancing, but because judgment without consequence isn't judgment at all. It's computation.

Good AI leadership understands this distinction. It stops asking what AI can do and starts asking what decisions need to be made better, by whom, and with what accountability. That reframe is the difference between an organization that deploys AI and one that actually benefits from it.

Companies that get this don't use AI to replace their people. They use it to make their people more powerful. That's not a subtle difference. It's the entire game.

The executives who understand this aren't the ones with the most tools. They're the ones getting the most out of them.
